Some time ago , I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended , as there are a whole lot of antique shops near my home . So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me . I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception . I was quite wrong . The man wouldn’t even look at my chair.
The second shop , though slightly more polite , was just the same, and the third and the fourth --- so I decided that my approach must be wrong .
I went into the fifth shop with a plan in my mind . I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper , “Would you like to buy a chair ?” He looked it over carefully and said, “Yes , not a bad chair. How much do you want for it , sir ?” “Twenty pounds ,” I said . “OK ,” he said , “I’ll give you twenty pounds.” “It’s got a slightly broken leg,” I said . “Yes , I saw that , it’s nothing .”
Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited . “What will you do with it ?” I asked . “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done .” “I’ll buy it ,” I said , “ What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me ,” he said . “Yes , I know but I’ve changed my mind . I’m sorry , I’ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it .” “You must be crazy ,” he said . Then , suddenly the penny dropped . “ I know what you want . You want me to repair your chair.” “You’re right ,” I said . “And what would you have done if I had walked in and said , ‘ Would you mend this chair for me?’” “ I wouldn’t have agreed to do it ,” he said . “We don’t do repairs , not enough money in it and too much trouble . But I’ll mend this for you , shall we say for a five ?” He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing .

The way people hold to the belief that a fun-filled, painfree life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness . If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness . But in fact , the opposite is true : more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.
As a result , many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness . They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children , professional achievement , religious commitment , self-improvement .
Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying . If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment .For commitment is in fact quite painful . The single life is filled with fun , adventure , excitement . Marriage has such moments , but they are not its most distinguishing features .
Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three-day vacation . I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children . But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild .
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations . It liberates time : now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness . It liberates money : buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless . And it liberates us from envy : we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
60. According to the author , a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because ____ .
A. he is reluctant to take on family responsibilities
B . he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single
C . he finds more fun in dating than in marriage
D . he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement
61. Raising children , in the author’s opinion is ____ .
A . a moral duty B . a thankless job
C . a rewarding task D. a source of inevitable job
62. From the last paragraph , we learn that envy sometimes stems from ___ .
A . hatred B . misunderstanding C . prejudice D . ignorance
63 . To understand what true happiness is one must ___ .
A . have as much fun as possible during one’s lifetime
B . make every effort to liberate oneself from pain
C . put up with pain under all circumstances
D. be able to distinguish happiness from fun
64. What is the author trying to tell us ?
A . Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.
B . One must know how attain happiness.
C . It is important to make commitments.
D . It is pain that leads to happiness.

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep : the phone , the car , the cooker , the computer , the TV , or her boyfriend , she said “the phone” . Personally , I could do without the phone entirely , which makes me unusual because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology .
Point 1 : The telephone creates the need to communicate , in the same way that more roads create more traffic . My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day . If the phone did not exist , would she have anything to talk about ?
Point 2 : The mobile phone means that we are never alone . “The mobile saved my life ,” says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton . Trapped inside , she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance to her rescue .
Point 3 : The mobile removes our secret . It allows Marketing Manager of Haba Deutsch , Carl Nicolaisen , to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of day to ask where they are , where they are going , and how their last meeting went.
Point 4 : The telephone separates us . Antonella Bramante in Rome says , “ We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window . It was easy to get his number . We were so near --- but we didn’t meet for the first two weeks !”
Point 5 : The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives . Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously on chat lines ( at least my daughter does . I wouldn’t know what to talk about ). We can talk across the world . We can even talk to astronauts ( if you know any ) while they’re spacewalking . And , with the phone line hooked up to the computer , we can access the Internet , the biggest library on earth.
65. How do you understand “Point 1 : The telephone creates the need to communicate , …” ?
A . The telephone creates more traffic.
B . People communicate because of the creating of the telephone .
C . People communicate more since the telephone has been created .
D . People communicate more because of more traffic .
66. Which of the following best shows people’s attitude towards mobile phones ?
A . Mobile phones are useful when you have an accident.
B . Mobile phones bring convenience to people.
C . Mobile phones can help people go across the world .
D . Mobile phone number is easy to get .
67. The underlined word “simultaneously” most probably means ____ .
A . in a friendly way B . in an easy way
C . at the same time D . through computers
D

Also , they did not have to process the film immediately . They could bring it back to their studios and develop it later meaning that they did not have to carry lots of equipment . And finally , the inventions of the small handheld cameras made photography less expensive.
With the small camera , anyone could be a photographer . People began to use cameras just for fun . They took pictures of their families , friends and favorite places . They called these pictures “snapshot” .
Photographs became very popular in newspapers in the 1890s. Soon magazines and books also used documentary photographs . These pictures showed true events and people . They were much more real than drawing.

Dear editor ,
My name is Li Jia . I’m a student of Biyuan Middle School. Our school lies at the foot of a mountain with a river passing by . There used to be many green trees and all kinds of flowers in our school all the year round. It looked like a beautiful garden and was a nice place for us to study in . But everything has changed since a chemical works was built near our school a year ago. Every day it produces a lot of waste water and harmful gases . The terrible pollution has done great harm to our health . And the great noise from the factory has greatly affected our teaching and studying activities . We suffer a lot from the pollution .
We do hope some measures will be taken to stop the pollution.
Yours truly,
Li Jia
