l Teaching objectives:
Ability goals:
The students are clearer about the importance of taste.
The students are able to describe a simple scene.
The students learn how to deal with difficult problems by referring to what they can do.
Moral goals:
The students know what taste is.
The students’ can appreciate a simple art.
l Teaching key points:
To help the students work out ways of describing a painting.
To encourage the students to express their ideas.
To develop the students ability to deal with difficult problems by referring to what they can do and by working with other students.
l Teaching difficult points:
To help the students understand some basic ways of describing a painting.
To make the students understand how to use their acquired knowledge to help them with their study.
l Teaching procedure:
Step 1 lead-in
1. Your preference, your taste:
Share a famous saying by John Ruskin “Taste is … the only morality(伦理道德).Tell me what you like, I'll tell you what you are.” to show how important taste is.
2. Their styles, your taste:
Show pictures of different styles in pairs and ask the students to choose what they like.
Introduce the title of the text “A Matter of Taste” on the blackboard.
Step 2 pre-reading
3. Your knowledge, your taste
①Ask students if they know something about the paintings( the names of the paintings, the painters)
If the students are not sure about their answers, ask them to find the answers in the text quickly.
②How to describe a painting?
Ask the students to look at a simple picture on the blackboard
Ask the students questions about the picture.
Introduce some key words on the blackboard while asking.
4. Your choice, your taste
Ask the students to choose a phrase and a colour to show their taste.
The girl sitting on the bench is thinking/deep in thought.
To emphasize the girl, I choose to paint her shirt red/ green/…
Step 3 while-reading
Complete the table with words in the text.

5. Your voice, your taste
Ask the students to think alone and then give their opinions on how to describe a painting
6. Your ability, your taste
Ask the students to discuss in groups to describe a painting (Mona Lisa, Father, Four Players etc.)
Ask one student in each group to represent their group work.
Step 5 Homework
Complete exercise 6 on Page 37
Choose or draw one picture and write a short passage about it.
